4 Ways To Build A Large List Of Hungry Prospects

LIST BUILDING is probably the single most important thing you can do to build your business online. Building a list of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of loyal subscribers can do a massive amount for the growth of your business.

How would you feel if you could rake in thousands of dollars with one email? That’s exactly what targeted list building can do for you.

Once you have a list, you can generate cash almost on demand, as long as you hold the trust of your subscriber base.

So here are some proven techniques to build your list fast …

1. Make an irresistible offer, but don’t throw in the kitchen sink

You may have come across lots of opt in pages on the internet trying to get you to leave your email address, and you may have noticed some offer lots of incentives, while others don’t.

The trick is to strike a balance between offering too much and not offering anything; If you offer too much you attract freebie seekers, but if you don’t offer anything then there’s no reason for anybody to leave their details.

Keep it simple and offer something you know will be of tremendous value to your subscribers, leaving them wanting for more.

Email courses are an extremely popular and effective option. It gives you the opportunity to showcase your expertise while offering something of value. You could offer, say, a 7-day mini email course after which you could offer something more extensive that will expand on the course. If the free course was helpful, people would be more than willing to pay for something that would help them even more.

As long as you keep offering useful and informative content you have a customer for life.

2. Build a list, but don’t sacrifice relationships

Building a list of subscribers isn’t just about the numbers. After all, your subscribers are real people with goals and ambitions. If you treat your subscribers like numbers, they will likely not be very responsive, and most likely will not be staying on your list very long.

Once your subscribers know, like and trust you, they are much more likely to follow your recommendations and buy from you. They will also be more than happy to recommend you to the people they know. Think of it like running a restaurant. Is anyone likely to stick around if you don’t care about what they want?

After you’ve gained your subscribers’ trust, don’t go breaking that bond with poor quality offers. Put your subscriber list at the centre of your online marketing efforts.

3. Make it easy for people to sign up

Place a lead magnet or opt in form on a prominent area of your site, like the sidebar, so visitors can sign up from any page. You don’t know where your visitors will be coming from, or where they’ll be at any one time, so you want to make your opt in form as visible and accessible as possible.

Keep it short and simple. At this stage, name and e-mail is all you’ll need in most cases.

4. Buy the ad, not the list

It takes time to build a list, and you may be tempted to look for shortcuts. Buying lists is probably not the way to go, unless you are looking for one time transactions only.

There are a couple of issues you may be facing with purchased lists:

  1. The list may not have been built ethically and may even have been built using spam tactics.
  2. Even if the list was built ethically you don’t know how targeted the prospects and how they will respond to the offers in your niche. The list could have been built using a variety of methods and you have no way of knowing if this audience is targeted to your niche.

It goes without saying, you need a targeted audience if you’re going to market anything. If you’re in the golf niche, for example, and you buy a list, there’s a very good chance your list includes a  variety of unrelated niches – maybe dog training or pet supplies, maybe they were looking for information on movies or PC games.

None of these prospects would be interested in your golf offers, because it has nothing to do with what they originally gave their information for.

You could consider solo ads as a good alternative; ie renting a spot in a newsletter that caters to your specific niche. If you’re in the natural health foods niche for example, you could pay to advertise your squeeze page in a natural health newsletter. That way, all the people who subscribed to your list are interested in the information you’re providing (at least in theory).

It is still advisable to do your due diligence, and ask questions around what methods they use to build their list. It’s a whole subject matter not for this article but to start off google “how to buy solo ads”.
